 IN THE CLASSROOM

**Students will be reading a play called The Strongest One. We will be focusing on expression, fluency, and vocabulary with this story.  Reading groups will also include reading plays and performing them for the class.

**In writing, we will be starting a unit on Fairy Tales.  Students will create new endings and write their own tales.  We will also read several traditional and fractured fairy tales.

** In the next two weeks students are going to focus on verbs for their language skill.  They will work with verbs that are singular, plural, irregular, past tense, and present tense.

**We will be starting Chapter 9 in Science.  This chapter deals with renewable and nonrenewable resources.  It goes nicely with our Conservation Day trip.

**Our classroom has started making their Poetry Anthologies.   Students will do many different things with these, which include comparing poems, writing poems, and finding poems they like by other authors.

Homework:

Math homework is getting done every night by all students!!!  We are now well into reading logs.  Students will still pick two nights to read for 20 minutes.  Then they will complete a reading log.  This means they will have 2 reading log responses by Friday each week.  If this does not happen, they will miss their P.E. class.

Spelling Contracts are also due on Friday.  Students can do 7 activities for an A+.  I require them to do 4, and that grade is a C.  If they do not have 4 done by Friday, they miss recess to get them completed.  Students get a new contract sheet every Monday.  These should help their spelling grades!!!

PARENT INFORMATION

If you child reads 200 pages in the month, they will earn a Book-It certificate.  They will get a graph next week to record their reading.  It will be kept in the homework folder.  Your child may have to read more than the required reading homework time of 40 minutes a week to earn this reward!! Students have their sheets, so they can begin recording how much they read.  The goal for November is 200 pages.  Once this is complete they will just turn the sheet into me, and I will give them a free pizza certificate.
